NEWRY — Maine Adaptive is set to host its 37th annual Ski-a-Thon, presented by L.L. Bean and the Alera Group, on Sunday, March 23.
The event brings together more than 150 skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities to hit the slopes in celebration of their fundraising efforts for Maine Adaptive. The gathering supports Maine Adaptive’s mission to empower people with disabilities by providing access to outdoor recreation opportunities throughout the state.
Participants who meet the $250 minimum fundraising goal can experience a full day of skiing at Sunday River, a lunch provided by Mainely Provisions, a fun-run race, a costume contest, and an Après-Ski Party at Sunday River Brewing Company, according to a news release from Maine Adaptive.
Maine Adaptive offers a diverse range of programs, including alpine skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, indoor climbing, mountain biking, paddling, cycling, tennis and rock climbing. These programs are provided free to all participants, made possible by fundraising events like the Ski-a-Thon.
“Last year, we raised over $260,000, and with demand for our programs at an all-time high, we have set this year’s goal at $300,000,” said Amy Bannon, managing director for Maine Adaptive. “Every program we offer currently has a waitlist. Increased participation means more wear and tear on equipment and a greater need for replacement and maintenance, all of which come with costs. The funds raised through the Ski-a-Thon are crucial to keeping our programs accessible for all.”
This winter Maine Adaptive served over 280 students with the support of 270 volunteers, delivering nearly 1,500 lessons at various locations throughout the state, including Sunday River, Sugarloaf, Pleasant Mountain, Saddleback Mountain and Pineland Farms.
