Two men were arrested in connection to a shooting attack on police the evening of Aug. 15 into Aug. 16 on Eaton Hill Road in Rumford, Rumford police Chief Tony Milligan said in a Facebook post.

Joseph Allen Denbow Jr., 33, whose last known address is in Norway, was charged with eluding an officer, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, and violation of conditions of release, according to Milligan.

Denbow remains in custody and is being held in lieu of $20,000 cash bail at the Oxford County Jail in Paris, according to court paperwork.

Troy Scott Murch Jr., 38, of Norway, was charged with eluding an officer and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and operating after habitual offender revocation, according to court orders.

Murch remains at the Oxford County Jail in Paris and is being held in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.

They both appeared before a judge Aug. 18, according to court documents. Their next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 19 at an Oxford County court. Conditions for both include no use or possession of dangerous weapons or firearms.

Rumford Police Department is working in partnership with the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and multiple law enforcement agencies to continue gathering evidence and identifying all involved parties.

Based on the current investigation, this incident is believed to have been an attack on law enforcement officers in an attempt to evade capture, Milligan wrote. The investigation remains active.

Police are looking for three more people believed to be involved in the incident, who police say are believed to have fled the Rumford area. The suspects fled the scene after their vehicle crashed.

Milligan put out a temporary shelter-in-place order at the beginning of the chase in the late hours of Aug. 15 and early hours of Aug. 16 before it was lifted.

“The community can be assured that we are making meaningful progress in this investigation, due in large part to the strong support of our state and federal partners,” Milligan wrote. “To ensure those involved are held accountable in a court of law, the team of investigators are proceeding diligently and thoroughly to build a comprehensive, evidence-based case and ensure justice is served.

To protect case integrity, no further details will be released at this time, Milligan wrote.

“The Rumford Police Department thanks our local, county, state, and federal partners for their assistance,” he wrote.

The penalty for the charges range from up to six months in jail to a maximum five years in prison.
