In his takeaways of the Class A championship, Press Herald reporter Steve Craig said that the Thornton Academy Golden Trojans showed, “They clearly were the best team in Class A, the best team in the state.” The Varsity Maine football poll voters agree, and in the final rankings of the 2025 season have voted Thornton as the unanimous No. 1 team for the fifth consecutive week.
While the Golden Trojans couldn’t be ranked any higher, Westbrook, Greely and Winthrop/Monmouth/Hall-Dale each moved up at least two spots in the poll after claiming state titles. The Class B champion Blue Blazes jumped to second after being ranked fifth last week. The Rangers, Class C champs, moved from sixth to fourth, while winning Class D propelled the Ramblers from just outside the rankings to a tie for eighth.
The final poll includes four Class A teams, three from Class B, two from Class C and one Class D squad. Other teams receiving votes this week were Falmouth (10), Bangor (7), Marshwood (2) and Winslow (1).
Three of the five fall sports polls finished with unanimous No. 1 teams — football, field hockey and boys soccer. See the final rankings for the other fall sports: field hockey, boys soccer, girls soccer and volleyball.
