Emmie Steams hit a 3-pointer to pull the University of Maine within two points with 1:16 left, but the University of Illinois Chicago pulled way for a 64-54 win in the Turkey Tipoff at Iona on Friday in New Rochelle, New York.
The Black Bears (1-5) trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half before outscoring the Flames 18-11 in the third quarter to get back into the game. Sarah Talon of Windham scored seven of her nine points in the third.
Adrianna Smith had 12 points and eight rebounds for Maine but fouled out with 2:57 left. Talon fouled out 21 seconds later.
Asta Blauenfeldt led Maine with 14 points.
Julia Coleman had 24 points and seven rebounds for UIC (4-3) . Tutu Clayton added 12 points, and Magdalena Winter had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
