FARMINGTON — In a letter to the community Tuesday, Regional School Unit 9 Superintendent Christian E. Elkington said school board Director Griffin Mayhew of Wilton died Monday.

Elkington described Mayhew as “an exemplary young man whose commitment, kindness and thoughtfulness were evident throughout his service on the board and through his support of student activities at Mt. Blue Campus.”

“I got to know Griffin over the last five months as he started as a Board Member and was totally impressed with the concerns he shared, the questions he asked, his attention to student and staff needs, along with the respect and dignity he showed and modeled to all I saw him converse with. He was a wonderful, kind, and considerate young person which we need in public life,” Elkington said.

Out of respect for Mayhew and his family, Elkington said Tuesday night’s regularly scheduled RSU 9 board meeting was postponed. It was rescheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 16.

Mayhew was elected in June to the board of directors for a three-year term.

Elkington said Mayhew was “deeply dedicated to the students, staff, and families of RSU 9. His loss will be felt not only by his family and friends, but also by the University of Maine at Augusta, where he worked.”

Elkington said Mayhew had recently begun focusing on student opportunities and building needs, calling them two early priorities during his service.

According to the University of Maine System website, Mayhew was an admissions counselor for the University of Maine at Augusta and University of Maine at Farmington.

“For the past four years Griffin worked tirelessly to support Mt. Blue High School athletic events, always being available to help in any way possible,” Elkington said.

No other details were available Tuesday.
