LEWISTON — Voters in the city’s Ward 4 haven’t had a representative on the City Council so far this year. That’s set to change Feb. 7.

Voters in Ward 4 will go to the polls to select which of three residents is best suited to represent their interests. They are Christina Berry of 13 Dupuis Ave., Doreen Christ, of 1 Buckley Ave, and Charles Turgeon, of 43 Buckley St.

Voters elected Christ at the polls in November, until the vote was voided due to a residency error. Christ was the only official candidate listed on that ballot, although Turgeon ran a write-in campaign.

A review of residency records after the election showed that she was not a resident of the ward long enough qualify for the November vote.

Christ moved within the city from College Street in Ward 3 to Buckley Street in Ward 4 on July 4, almost a month after the deadline to qualify for the election. According to city rules, she needed to be a Ward 4 resident by June 9 to qualify.

That voided the election. Christ, now a Ward 4 resident for much longer than the three months necessary to qualify, is back on the ballot.

Turgeon, who said he started his campaign too late to qualify for the November’s ballot is campaigning as well. In November’s election, Turgeon mounted a write-in campaign. Berry, a relative newcomer to the race, said she thinks she can make a difference for the city.

Ward 4 is in the center of the city, from the intersection of Farwell and Webster streets east to Pond Road and from Sabattus Street south to Old Greene Road south to the Webster Street-Pond Road intersection.

Voters can cast their ballots at the Multi-Purpose Center, 145 Birch St. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. They can also vote by absentee ballots by contacting the Lewiston City Clerk’s office at 514-3124. Residents have until Thursday, Feb. 2, to request an absentee ballot.
