FARMINGTON — It’s going to be a super Tuesday for the Farmington Police Department, according to department Secretary Bonnie Pomeroy: The long-awaited move from the station in the Municipal Building to the new station on Franklin Avenue will finally take place.
A private company has been hired to move filing cabinets and heavy furniture on Tuesday, but Chief Jack Peck and other members of the department spent some time Thursday packing and moving smaller items.
The department will open at the new station on Wednesday. The current station will remain open Tuesday during the move.
Some last-minute work will continue on the new station, Peck said. A generator is expected to arrive Friday. The department’s radio and phones will be changed over by Tuesday.
A new sign for the Richard Caton III Memorial Police Station will be up in front of the former medical building at 116 Franklin Ave. The building was donated to the town by Franklin Memorial Hospital. Former Chief Caton spent hours before his death trying to find a solution to the department’s space needs.
The Police Department has worked in cramped quarters for decades at the Municipal Building. Available space will go from about 1,500 square feet to more than 6,000 square feet.
Space needs were tight at the station when Peck started working for the department 22 years ago. Since then, the size of the force has doubled.
Once settled in, the department plans to hold an open house for residents to view the new quarters, Pomeroy said.
