100 years ago, 1912
While reaching for a wheel which had rolled into the canal at the foot of Ash street, Lewiston, Frank Beaudoin, son of Frank Beaudoin, 36 Lincoln street, lost his balance and fell into the water, about 5:15 o’clock Friday afternoon. He was rescued altho he sank once and came near drowning. The boy had been playing with a wheel which he had made himself. Samuel H. Young, who is located at the gate house, secured a rake and others came to his assistance. The boy was pulled out of the canal and removed to his home, where he soon revived.
50 years ago, 1962
The attractive baseball field at Pettengill Park again is being overrun by an overflow of water from the Pettengill Brook and Auburn Parks and Recreation Director Harry G. Coulter Jr. is investigating means of eliminating the almost-yearly destructive flooding. The brook overflows at the mouth of a 30-inch reinforced concrete drainage pipe at the end of the pond, and water runs over the road and through the outfield section of the baseball field. As a result, activity at the field is curtailed and several games have to be postponed.
25 years ago, 1987
Androscoggin County voters most likely will decide the fate of funding for a new jail this fall. “We’ve got a real good shot at a November referendum,” consultant Rod Miller told the Androscoggin County Jail Committee on Wednesday. “You’ve made tremendous progress.” The committee decided the jail should be built on the block that holds the old jail and the county courthouse. The block is bordered by Pleasant, Hampshire, Turner and Court Streets.
