FAIRFIELD — Authorities are investigating after a 3-month-old baby died in the care of a babysitter at a Fairfield home, reports the Morning Sentinel.

Police say the babysitter called police early Sunday morning to report that the infant was not breathing.

The baby’s parents live in Clinton and had arranged for the child to spend the night at the babysitter’s home.

Emergency officials arrived just six minutes after the emergency call at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday but the infant was pronounced dead at MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer campus. An autopsy is scheduled.

Authorities have not described the death as suspicious and no charges have been filed, but police tell the Morning Sentinel the death of any child aged three years or younger automatically triggers an investigation by state police.
