RUMFORD — Hope Association is proud to celebrate National and Maine Direct Support Professionals Week Sept. 9-15.

Direct support professionals are often referred to as DSPs. They are those that provide personal assistance to so many in our community and are the primary providers of publicly-funded long term supports and services for millions of individuals. They work long hours, unusual shifts and are often forced to leave their jobs due to inadequate wages and benefits.

They assist individuals with disabilities with the most intimate needs; they prepare meals, help with medications, bathing, dressing, mobility, work, religious and recreational activities. They strive to help keep the individuals connected to their family and the community. They are vital to assisting individuals with disabilities to live meaningful, productive lives. They are advocates when others cannot speak.

Hope Association is very proud of its DSPs. They are all certified with the National College of Direct Support and take strides to enhance their knowledge and continue their education and expertise.
