When the new Kevin James movie “Here Comes the Boom” opens on Oct. 12, a local face will likely join the comedian on the screen. Brandon Pelletier, an aspiring actor from Auburn, found work as an extra on the film, which is set in the world of mixed martial arts competition.

The Sun Journal wanted to know a little more.

How did you get into the movie? This opportunity came to me by surprise. I had gone online and filled out a couple profiles with casting agencies. One afternoon, I received a call from the casting director asking me if I would be interested to work in a film as an extra in Boston.

What did you know about the movie before you arrived at the set? Prior to this moment on the phone I had no knowledge of the film, the description they gave me was short and to the point. But I know who Kevin James and Salma Hayek are, so the decision wasn’t difficult. Regardless, a starting actor has to begin somewhere.

What was your role as an extra? My role was a “Venue Crew Member” as they put it or, put simply, a member of the team handling the fight.

How much time did you spend on the movie? Filming one scene lasted the better portion of two days. We had to film at the darkest times to be in full control of the light for the scene. Twelve hours seems like a lot but when you have to get 5-10 takes of the same shot to get those various angles, it goes quickly. As soon as the sun came up it was over as far as the director was concerned. I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a lot of “hurry up and wait,” these things take time. Not to mention it was a hot couple of days in May, which wouldn’t be that big of a deal if they hadn’t been trying to make it appear as February. Everyone was in winter clothes, wiping the sweat from the face at every cut.

The movie stars Kevin James and Henry Winkler. What were they like? Meeting the cast was surreal at moments. Henry Winkler was one of the sweetest old men I have ever met. He was still running around with more energy than any of us at 6 in the morning, after a five-hour shoot. He climbed the scaffolding on the set to hang out with us during breaks. Kevin seemed fully focused on doing his part, then again it was late or early I should say. Morale on the set was great, most likely because the Bruins won the Eastern Conference finals.

Did you see any pampered star behavior? I didn’t see much pampering going on. Well, maybe a little …

Are you a fan of movies? Absolutely, nothing beats relaxing in bed to a good movie or going to see the latest shock and awe film at the theater.

After spending time on a set, do you look at movies differently? There is a lot a person can be ignorant to when dealing with filming movies. It never really hit me ’til that night. We had to take shot after shot to get multiple angles for one scene. And everyone has to remember their exact position when returning to the set. Or how you hear music in movies, nine times out of ten everyone is really dancing to silence or pantomiming.

You’re in the trailer for the movie. Are we likely to recognize you? Yes, you can see me in the trailer, but only time will tell as to how much footage was really used in the end. I have a feeling you might catch me in there a couple of times.

Would you work as an extra again? Since this is still the early phases of an acting career, I would say “yes.” As time passes, hopefully I’ll become a better actor, and the roles will follow. All the same though, I do this because I love it. The reactions on peoples faces in response to a line or character is what makes films great, and hopefully someday I will contribute to some of those reactions.
