Scrapbook fundraiser

LISBON FALLS — A Scrapbook Fundraiser will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, at MTM Center, 18 School St., to support Jenna Clifford, a junior at Lisbon High School, in her journey to Ghana the summer of 2013.

Clifford plans to travel abroad and volunteer in an impoverished village to assist in the building of a school, a goal she has been pursuing throughout her time in high school.

There will be raffles, door prizes and food. Participants may attend from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for $35, which includes lunch and dinner, or from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for $25, which includes lunch only.

Knights to show film ‘Bella’

LEWISTON — On Sunday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. the Holy Cross Knights of Columbus Council 12,652 will present “Bella.”

Bella is a motion picture masterpiece and became the no. 1 top rated movie of 2007. An international soccer star (Eduardo Verastegui) is on his way to sign a multi-million dollar contract when a series of events unfold that brings his career to an abrupt end. A beautiful waitress (Tammy Blanchard), struggling to make it in New York City, discovers something about herself that she’s unprepared for. In one irreversible moment, their lives are turned upside down, until a simple gesture of kindness brings them both together, turning an ordinary day into an unforgettable experience. This movie is rate PG-13.

There is no charge to view this movie and a concession stand will be available along with a 50/50 drawing. The movie will be shown at 1 p.m. in the Holy Cross Church Hall, 1080 Lisbon St.

Obesity epidemic to be discussed

AUBURN — “The Obesity Epidemic” is the topic of a “Mini-Medical School” educational program set for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in Chairmen’s Room A and B, located on the lower level of the 12 High Street Medical Office Building.

Bariatric surgeon Jamie Loggins, M.D., will examine the link between obesity and cancer, the cost of obesity and cardiometabolic issues, as well as treatment and prevention.

His presentation is the last in a series of five “Mini-Med” educational programs sponsored by Central Maine Medical Center.

Loggins, a general surgeon who specializes in bariatric surgery, is medical director of Central Maine Bariatric Surgery, a Central Maine Medical Group surgical practice. He is also chief of surgery at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

The program is open free of charge to the community. A background in science or medicine is not necessary to attend.

Historical Society to meet Nov. 14

LISBON FALLS — Russ Wrede of Lisbon Falls will be a guest speaker on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Lisbon Historical Society, MTM Center, 18 School St.

Adjutant of Lisbon Falls American Legion Post 66 and a retired Marine officer, Wrede will discuss their Christmas for the Troops program, as well as provide prospectives of overseas deployment in a hostile environment. John Schlaack, commander of Post 66, will assist with the presentation.

Free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Events start at 7. Entrance and parking is in the rear of the building.
