AUGUSTA (AP) — As expected, the Maine House of Representatives has rejected a bill that would have made it illegal to use handheld cellphones while driving.

The House on Tuesday voted down the bill 104-38, accepting a legislative committee’s recommendation to reject it.

The bill sponsored by Biddeford Democrat Paulette Beaudoin would have barred cellphone use behind the wheel, with exceptions, including by police and other public safety officials.

House Minority Leader Kenneth Fredette said he voted against the measure because “big government doesn’t need to be making decisions for people.” The Newport Republican said Maine residents are proud of their personal freedom.

Texting while driving is barred in Maine.

The Portland Press Herald reported that legislators also rejected a bill requiring all adult motorcyclists to wear helmets.
