TOPSHAM — The American Cancer Society’s 35th annual Living With Cancer Conference will take place from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at the Augusta Civic Center.

Each year cancer patients and survivors, family members, caregivers and health care professionals come together to attend this event. This year’s theme, “Celebrating Each Day: Past, Present, and Future,” is a day of sharing personal stories and medical information designed to help cancer patients and their families as they continue along their cancer journeys.

Attendees can participate in a variety of informative workshops, visit community resource exhibits and share similar experiences and stories with others touched by cancer.

Keynote speaker is Otis Brawley, M.D., chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society. Brawley is responsible for promoting the society’s goals for cancer prevention, early detection and quality treatment through cancer research and education.

The afternoon speaker, Neal Goodwin, Ph.D., senior fellow and director of business development for In Vivo services at the Jackson Laboratory, manages three programs and has led innovative research that established the JAX Patient-Derived Xenograft Cancer Consortium.

Workshop topics include palliative care, acupuncture, skin cancer treatment, new advances in the understanding and treatment of lung cancer, wills and powers of attorney, “Rad Art: A Journey Through Radiation Treatment” and more. Presenters include medical professionals, American Cancer Society volunteers and other specialists.

The popular patient panel will include cancer survivors and caregivers, each sharing their personal cancer journeys and the effects of the cancer diagnosis on each of them.

The conference is a free event for cancer patients, their families and caregivers, though there is a $10 fee for lunch. A fee of $45 will be asked of medical professionals and all others, which includes lunch. To learn more or for a registration form, visit www.cancer.org/LWCC or call 1-800-227-2345.
