AUGUSTA (AP) — A Maine woman says she should be able to keep her exotic pet fish in her home’s indoor pond even though the state prohibits them.
Georgette Curran of Harpswell told a judge Wednesday that Maine is the only state that prohibits the possession of koi, a colorful carp-like ornamental fish originally from Japan. In a permit application last year, Curran described her koi — which she has given names such as Lemon and Ulysses — as a substitute for the antidepressant drug Prozac.
Assistant Attorney General Mark Randlett told the Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/12gtY3w ) that koi are considered an invasive species that could compete with and threaten native fish populations should they be released into the wild.
Justice Donald Marden is expected to rule on the case later.
