DIXFIELD — No. 1 Dirigo relied on seventh-inning heroics to escape with a 4-3 victory over stubborn No. 8 Old Orchard Beach in a Western Class C baseball quarterfinal Thursday.
After being down 3-0 in the fourth inning, the Cougars came back to tie the game in the bottom of that inning.
Two scoreless innings later and Dirigo made its move in the bottom of the seventh.
Spencer Trenoweth, who some how got caught in two rundowns and still got back to first safely, walked and eventually moved to second on Brett Whittemore’s successful bunt.
The pair then executed a double steal to put runners at second and third base. Pinch hitter Brian Vokernick came to the plate and singled, driving in Trenoweth with the winning run. Chad Snowman got the win on the mound and OOB’s Adam Langella had two singles.
St. Dom’s 9, Madison 3
AUBURN — Winning pitcher William Desmarais grabbed three RBI off a single and a bases-loaded walk, giving St. Dom’s the edge as the Saints overwhelmed Madison, 9-3, in boys’ Class C baseball playoff action.
Desmarais got it done in more than one way, shutting down the Madison offense and allowing zero runs through four innings for the Saints (16-2).
Desmarais had solid hitting support from teammate Zakary Johnson, who finished the game with three hits and started the hitting affair by launching a triple. Johnson was later brought home with a sacrifice fly, courtesy of teammate Caleb Dostie.
The Saints have their hands full with a hot Winthrop team to match up against on Saturday.
Madison was led on the mound by Chase Malloy who went six innings. The Bulldogs (8-10) were balanced by K.P. Carpenter who finished the day scattering three hits.
Falmouth 5, Poland 4
FALMOUTH — Thomas Fortier overwhelmed the Poland offense by throwing a complete game. He gave up just five hits on four runs as Falmouth topped Poland in a close 5-4 victory. Fortier walked just four on the day while striking out nine.
Courtesy of Fortier and the Falmouth offense, Falmouth moves on to the next round of playoffs in boys’ Class B baseball.
William D’Agostino and Andrew Emple both scattered a hit and scored a run for the Yachstmen (15-2).
Bill Bickford led the way, slicing two hits and tagging two of the four runs for the Knights (10-8). Kaleb Bridgham also tallied in a hit while scoring once.
Softball
Dirigo 12, Carrabec 0
DIXFIELD — Cami Denny pitched near flawless softball, shutting down the Carrabec offense while allowing just four hits through five innings, as Dirigo dropped Carrabec, 12-0, in girls’ playoff softball action.
Natasha Deroche gave ample run support for the Cougars (12-5) by scoring on three occasions and launching a home run. Ambyr Wilson and Emma Lueders paced Dirigo by scattering three and two hits, respectively. Lueders, Wilson and Deroche all combined for seven of the twelve runs scored on the day.
Carrabec catcher Mikayla Willette got the loss, giving up 10 runs through three innings. Brittany Lewis provided two hits on the day.
Skowhegan 1, Edward Little 0
SKOWHEGAN — Pitcher Kaitlyn Theriault shut down the Edward Little offense as Skowhegan snuck past Edward Little, 1-0, in the Class A softball playoffs.
Andrea Quirron tallied the only extra base hit on the day for the Indians (12-5) with a double. Skowhegan scored their only run in the third inning, while tallying six hits on the day.
Emily Schario threw for the Red Eddies (10-7), allowing just six hits. The usually red hot offense for the Eddies was quiet on Thursday, putting together just four hits through seven innings. Kori Norcross had the only extra base hit for EL with a double.
Madison 8, Mt. Abram 1
MADISON — No. 1 Madison erupted with four runs in the second inning and Emily McKenney struck out nine batters as the Bulldogs tossed aside No. 8 Mt. Abram, 8-1, in a Western Class C softball quarterfinal Thursday.
Kirsten Wood smacked a one-run triple in the second inning for the Bulldogs, and teammate Sierra LeBlanc singled, doubled and drove in a run. For the Roadrunners, Serena Lariviere singled twice.
