There was but little change in the strike situation, Thursday, except that the pouring rain kept many of the strikes under cover. Lunn & Sweet shoe company in Auburn adhere to the position taken by them all along, not to give in to the strikers and are training men to take their places. The strikers have picketed the factory as best they can but the Auburn police has detailed two officers to the factory and they keep the men on the move, breaking up efforts at assembling. Wednesday the strikers were out in full force. The factory was watched with interest. From the hill to the west, the conditions in the lasting room were observed with a spy glass.

Another one of those racing pigeons has been found in Auburn. Ward One Councilman John White of Upper Turner Street reported to police this morning that he had captured a wayward bird, which has been hanging around his farm for the past couple of days. The bird has a band on its right leg and the band bears the markings AU Aug. 63-1060. On the left leg is a green rubber band with the numbers 7264. White said that the bird appeared to be healthy and well fed. He said he would keep the bird for a few days and had already placed it in a cage.

An agreement may be reached soon that would allow the Lewiston-Auburn Pollution Control Authority to close its River Road sludge landfill in Lewiston during the next two years. A DEP environmental specialist said the department wants to have the agreement finalized by Jan. 1. “We are certainly encouraged by the authority’s intention to get this landfill closed out,” he said. “They are definitely on the right track.” Members of the authority also are looking at ways to remove water from sludge so that it will take up less landfill space. They also are examining the possibility of composting the sludge so it can be used on crops meant for human consumption. About half of the authority’s sludge is now spread on farm fields, and 70 percent is the authority’s goal. The authority will always need some landfill space because sludge can’t be spread on fields in the winter.
