BATH — Scarborough rallied with a goal late in regulation and then won in the first overtime to beat Hampden Academy 2-1 in the Class A boys’ state soccer final Saturday at McMann Field.

It is the second straight state title for the Red Storm and fourth in the past six years. Hampden was shooting or its first state championship, having lost to Greely in the 2004 game.

Sam Ware scored in the first overtime to lift the Red Storm to the comeback victory. Chris Cowie set the play in motion with a downfield kick. Matt Caron obtained possession and dropped a short pass for  Ware. He blasted it in from about 25 yards out to the top of the net.

Hampden (16-2)  had taken a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but the Red Storm (17-1) managed to tie and then win it with 8:08 left in the first overtime.

Though the Red Storm put a steady barrage of shots on the Broncos, keeper Isaiah Bess was outstanding, finishing with 16 saves.

Scarborough finally put one by him with 7:19 left in regulation on a Charles Mader goal. He outraced a defender and chipped it past Bess for the tally.

Noah Parker scored two minutes into the second half, blasting a shot off a Paxton Oversmith give-and-go pass.

Scarborough outshot the Broncos 25-14 in the game.

Bangor Christian 2, Richmond 1 (OT)

BATH — Bangor Christian won its fifth straight Class D state championship Saturday with a 2-1 win over Richmond in penalty kicks.

Bangor Christian (18-0) tied the game late in regulation on a penalty kick. After two scoreless overtime sessions, Bangor Christian won in penalty kicks by a score of 4-2.

A Western Maine D team hasn’t won the state title since the Bobcats did it in 2007. After Katahdin won in 2008, defeating Richmond, Bangor Christian has ruled Class D, including three wins over the Bobcats.

Richmond (13-2-2) took the lead in the second half after a hand ball call outside the penalty area. Nate Tribbett followed with a goal off a direct kick. The Bobcats held the lead until 52 seconds left when a take down in the box led to a Bangor Christian penalty kick and tying goal.

Girls’ Soccer

Washburn 2, Richmond 1

BATH — Washburn High School avenged last year’s lost in the Class D state championship game with a 2-1 win over Richmond on Saturday.

Carsyn Koch and Kristin Sarmiento each scored goals as Washburn built a 2-0 lead. Richmond got a late tally from Kelsea Anair but couldn’t produce the equalizer.

The Bobcats (16-2) defeated the Beavers (17-1) last fall, 2-1, to claim a third straight state championship. This was Washburn’s first state title.

After a scoreless first half, Koch scored early in the second half. The senior striker finished off a pass from Mackenzie Worcester for the Washburn lead.

Later in the half, Sarmiento made it 2-0 with 10 minutes left in regulation.  She took a Carmen Bragg pass from the opposite side and buried a shot from the left of the goal. Richmond answered with a tally by Anair but the Bobcats couldn’t score again.

Washburn outshot the Bobcats 23-10.

Windham 3, Bangor 0

BATH — After a scoreless first half, Windham scored early and never looked back in a 3-0 win over Bangor in the Class A girls’ state championship game.

Ciera Berthiaume scored at 51 seconds of the second half to put the Eagles (17-0-1) on the board after dominating much of the scoreless first half.

Luisa Sbardella made it 2-0 with 12 minutes left, scoring on a rebound. Then Jenna Soucy finished the scoring two minutes later.

It is the first Class A state title for the Eagles. Windham won Class B state championships in 1993 and 1994.

It was the second straight loss in the state game for the Rams, which lost to Scarborough last year. The Rams (16-2) have represented Eastern A in the state game four straight years, last winning the state title in 2011.

Bangor was outshot 33-5.
