A new industrial company has just been organized in Lewiston that bids fair to become of much importance in the future. For two or three years past the Androscoggin Concrete company has been doing business in Auburn but quite recently it has sold out and reorganized. The Auburn company has outgrown its quarters and can no longer keep up with its orders. The managers have purchased a new lot on Spring street, Lewiston, and will at once erect a new building.

(PHOTO) AIRBORNE CLOVER SEEDING — A new process of seeding a field with clover by use of an aircraft was tried Saturday morning at an Auburn farm. The work was done at a field owned by Auburn dairyman John W. White. From an aircraft flown out of Twitchell’s Airport at Turner, 30 acres of land were seeded with the clover in 15 minutes. For the work to have been done by hand would have taken three days. The aircraft is a former military primary trainer, converted for this type of work and for crop dusting, and features clipped wings for greater maneuverability. The plane was loaded with 200 pounds of seed and dispensing apparatus was calibrated to release 6½ pounds per acre per run over the field. On the ground at left is White, holding a marker for the benefit of the pilot, and Eugene Wallingford. Leroy E. Bingham of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Soil Conservation Service said Sunday he believes this is the first time this type of seeding operation has been done in Maine.

Area firefighters will get practice in some of the most hazardous aspects of their jobs, like negotiating smoke-filled rooms and battling gas fires, once a Minot Avenue training center is completed this fall in Auburn. Built with a combination of state funds, volunteer labor and private donations, the $80,000 complex behind the city’s central fire station will enable firefighters from throughout Androscoggin County and the state to practice battling fires, but with many of the dangers lessened. The training center will include a three-story concrete building where fires can be set under controlled circumstances.
