RUMFORD — The United Steel Workers Local 900 invites the public to attend and observe “Workers Memorial Day” to be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 27, at the Local 900 Union Hall, Route 108 in the Smithcrossing section of Rumford.

There will be a short service to remember all workers everywhere who lost their lives on the job. The organization has put the finishing touches on Maine’s only physical memorial, located in their parking lot, to honor all workers who died while at work or because of workplace hazards. There will be several speakers including Sen. John Patrick and USW Regional Representative Dan Lawson, and Local 900 president Ron Hemingway.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Workers Memorial Day in the United States. It is also the 43th anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the right of every worker to a safe job.

This is Local’s 2nd annual Workers’ Memorial Day observation and all working people and their families are invited. Snacks and refreshments will be served following the presentations. They expect everything to last approximately an hour.
