Veterans names on monument
LEWISTON — Any veteran who may want to have his or her name inscribed on a monument in the Veterans Memorial Park must have an honorable discharge or have been discharged from the military with a general discharge under honorable condition.
To have a veteran’s name inscribed on a monument, separation papers DD Form 214 and a cost of $35 are required.

Mini-garden make and take
LEWISTON — St. Mary’s Nutrition Center’s Lots to Gardens program will hold a gardening season kick-off event where community members can make their own mini-gardens to take home from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at Blake Street Community Garden, 243 Blake St.
Staff will be on hand to teach attendees how to build a mini-garden, how to care for it and will provide the necessary supplies on a first-come, first-served basis. This free event is open to everyone.
The goal of St. Mary’s Nutrition Center, in downtown Lewiston, is to promote community health through its food pantry, cooking and nutrition education, youth development and urban gardening programs. More information can be found at www.stmarysnutritioncenter.org.
Great Falls Forum: ‘Teaching English’
LEWISTON — The Great Falls Forum lecture series will present adult educators Anne Kemper of Lewiston and Joyce Walworth of Portland speaking on “The Changing Face of Maine: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in Lewiston and Portland” from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, May 16, in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library.

Seniors, Friends Luncheon May 20
AUBURN — Auburn Methodist Senior Citizens and Friends Luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the Auburn United Methodist Church, 439 Park Ave.

Entertainment will be the ELHS Show Choir. The menu is baked ham, macaroni and cheese, corn casserole, peas, rolls and ice cream pie. Cost is $7 per person.
South Turner Cemetery Assoc.
TURNER — The South Turner Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the home of Reynard and Pam Gilbert, Upper Street, next to the cemetery.
Funding will be discussed.
The meeting will be followed by volunteers raking leaves, straightening stones and other spring chores cleaning the cemetery.
Pancake breakfast at St. Philips
AUBURN — A pancake breakfast will take place from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Sunday, May 18, at St. Philip’s Church, Route 4, across from Lake Auburn. The public is invited.
Menu includes sausage patties, fruit cup, orange juice, coffee, milk and tea.
Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for ages 6-12 and free for 5 and under.
The breakfast is hosted by the family groups of St. Philip’s.
Italian dinner at Hebron Baptist
HEBRON — There will be an Italian dinner at the Hebron Community Baptist Church on Sunday, May 18, at 5 p.m.

Silent auction benefits food bank
MINOT — A silent auction will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Seventh Day Adventist Church, 310 Minot Ave.
Proceeds will benefit the church’s food bank.
Good Shepherd Food-Bank will match all money raised at the Matching Grant Challenge.
Items will include tools, motorcycle helmet, camping equipment, popcorn popper, doughnut maker, hair care products and gift certificates from Hammond Lumber, Dag Bait Shop and local restaurants.
There will also be a bake sale table and dickering corner.
Mammogram party is May 20
LEWISTON — In celebration of Mother’s Day, St. Mary’s Women’s Imaging and Breast Health Departments are hosting a Mother-Daughter Mammography party at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20. There will be light refreshments and raffle.
Because the hospital feels this screening is so important, it’s not limited to moms and their daughters. Any woman over 40 who hasn’t had a mammogram in the past 12 months is invited. To reserve a spot, call 777-4059.
Mammography screening is the best way to detect breast cancer in its earlier stages and saves lives, yet 4 out of 10 women don’t get this vital screening.
According to the American Cancer Society, mammograms reduce breast cancer mortality by 25-30 percent for women ages 50-70 and 18 percent for women ages 40-50. Additionally, early detection gives women new options for breast-conserving therapy.
Chef of The Year Gala & Awards
LEWISTON — The American Culinary Federation’s Central Maine Chapter will present the second annual Chef of The Year Gala & Awards Dinner on Tuesday, May 20, at The Ramada Inn Conference Center. Reception starts at 6 p.m., chef stations and awards at 6:30, entertainment around 7:15.
The night will feature award-winning dishes from more than 30 local chefs and restaurants, including Fishbones, DaVinci’s, Hilton, Pinky D’s, The Green Ladle, Jasmine Cafe, Schemengees, Rolly’s Diner, Hurricanes, Mac’s Grill and more.
Attendees will sample and vote on their favorite dishes.

Take a Veteran to School Day
AUBURN — The staff and students at Edward Little High School are holding their third annual Take a Veteran to School Day on Wednesday, May 21, in the ELHS gym. The ceremony on the theme Lest We Forget begins at 9:15 a.m., with a social time starting at 8:30.
This year’s guest speakers will be Christ and Jennifer Tyll, both graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy and veterans.
Chris Tyll is former Navy Seal and the veteran of more than 100 combat operations in Iraq.
After their presentations, Edward Little students will speak on the wars of the 20th century and other challenges veterans faced.
The school band and chorus will perform patriotic selections appropriate for the Memorial Day remembrance.
All veterans are invited. Transportation from the parking area will be provided at the high school.

Family Fun Triathlon launched
AUBURN — The Androscoggin Land Trust has announced the launch of a new event designed to get young people outside along and on the Androscoggin River: a Family Fun Triathlon. The tri is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, starting from Festival Plaza.
The event is a canoe, bike and run series that is short, fun and downtown. It is for families with children ages 8-16.

Young Scientists Club at APL
AUBURN — The APL children’s department is excited to team up with Jeanne Lothridge from the Maine Cooperative Extension Service to offer a Young Scientists Club beginning on Thursdays, May 22 through June 26, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Maggie Trafton Program Room.
Children ages 9-12 are welcome to explore science principles such as weather, water and aerospace with fun hands-on activities.
