DEAR SUN SPOTS: Loaves and Fishes is expanding its food pantry to accommodate the ever-increasing needs of hungry families.

Loaves and Fishes founder Sister Lucille Fournier passed way on June 28, and her wish would be that the organization continue to administer to the poor and needy.

We, the many volunteers, and our hosts, the Dominican Sisters, are carrying on the mission but are desperately in need of two full-size refrigerators and two commercial-size freezers.

If anyone can donate any of these items, it would be greatly appreciated. We can pick up the units if need be.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. — Moe Fournier, Loaves and Fishes, 61 Lisbon Road, Sabattus, 207-375-8399, [email protected]

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have a beautiful stainless steel (chrome on the outside) 36-cup coffee percolator like new. It would look good on any buffet table.

I will donate to any n0nprofit organization. Call 207-782-3661. — Irving Grant, Auburn

DEAR SUN SPOTS: There is an ad on TV for Phantom Gourmet. It appears that two guys are having a food fight.

If this is the case, I find it disgusting to waste even a little food, where people are going hungry, especially children. — Judy, Farmington

ANSWER: Sun Spots also hates waste. When she was young and worked at McDonald’s, they let employees take home the leftover food, but then they stopped that, and it all went in the trash. Further insult to those working for minimum wage.

The same was true at other restaurants where she was employed. Perhaps it still is true.

Some organizations are trying to reduce waste. Sun Spots was recently speaking to Mark, the produce manager at the Augusta Hannaford. He told her that they have have several outlets for old produce.

The first is food pantries and other assistance for the poor.

The second is for people like Sun Spots, who want scraps for their livestock (pigs, primarily).

And last but not least, he said, stuff that nothing can eat (flowers, for example) goes to a compost facility.

So things are getting better, but much remains to be done. The food those men threw at each other are probably just a small part of all the food that goes to waste at the studio where that commercial was shot, or other filming sites. Movie stars undoubtedly only eat the best and freshest of foods.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: For Betsy in South Paris who can’t find the clinic that made her dentures (Aug. 6), my guess is Central Maine Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates at 405 Center St. in Auburn, a big white house that has served as a dental office for many years.

The key word that tipped me off is “implants.” The implants would have been placed by an oral surgeon and the denture most probably fabricated in a lab offsite.

Dr. Lawrence sold the practice quite a few years ago to a gentleman. I think his name is Charles Palian. Hope this helps. — Louise, Auburn

ANSWER: Sun Spots looked him up and found a phone number of 207-783-4705. Thanks to Louise, Betsy can call and see if this is the right source.
