Holiday baking course in Turner

TURNER — Sign up now for two holiday baking courses being offered by SAD 52 Adult and Community Education.

“Bake the Night Away” on Thursday, Nov. 13: Learn to mix, knead, proof and shape basic yeast dough. Recipes will be shared. All baking levels are welcome for the hands-on class and children over age 9 may attend with an adult.

“Me Oh My … Love that Pie” on Thursday, Dec. 4: Make a standard two-crust pie as well as a fresh fruit tart. Learn the secrets of vinegar pastry dough. There will be hands-on time with instruction, recipes, tips and tasting opportunities.

Students for the bread class need to bring an apron, rolling pin, cutting board and a container to fill and take home.

Pie-baking class students also need an apron and rolling pin, plus plastic zip bag and rolling mat.

Wilton homemakers host craft fair

WILTON — Wilton Day Extension Homemakers will host the fourth annual craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, at St. Luke’s Church on the corner of School and High streets.

There will be food, crafts, raffle and white elephant tables. A lunch of soup and sandwich will be available. To reserve a table, call Becky Tyler at 779-7995.

Anyone interested in joining the Homemakers is welcome to attend a 10 a.m. meeting during the fair. Members do not have to live in Wilton to join. The group is held in partnership with the Cooperative Extension.

Plans for meetings in 2015 include a study of the country of Italy. Other topics planned include herbs, cooking for one, good and healthy carbs.

In addition to craft days and projects, the group does community service projects fir the Wilton Food Pantry, the animal shelter, the homeless shelter, Safe Voices and the Rotary tree decoration.

Learn to grow Christmas trees

FARMINGTON — The Upper Kennebec Valley Chapter of the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine and the Maine Forest Service will offer a session on growing Christmas trees for beginners at noon Thursday, Nov. 13.

Growing quality trees can be a complicated business or hobby. Learn the basics from the experts: Maine Forest Service Christmas tree expert Dave Rochester and Christmas tree farmer Walter Gooley of Conifers Unlimited in Farmington. They will explain acquiring growing stock, picking a site, planting, fertilizing, controlling, shearing and marketing.

Meet at Gooley’s Tree Farm on Cowen Hill Road, off Route 27 and dress for the weather. The event is free and open to all. There is no need to preregister. For more information, contact Patty Cormier at 592-2238 or [email protected] C.

Coat Closet has outer wear available

WILTON — Each fall the Coat Closet at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is stocked with free, dry-cleaned, gently used coats/jackets. Jackets for adults and children (including some snowsuits) are available now.

The church is open most mornings after 9 a.m., however, those wishing may call ahead at 645-2639 to be sure someone is there. Enter through the back door by the parking lot. St. Luke’s is located at 59 High St., corner of High and School streets.

College planning workshop

WILTON — The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will host a free workshop, “Essentials of College Planning,” for adults age 19 and up at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Wilton Career Center, 865 U.S. Route 2E.

The starting point for all MEOC participants, the free interactive workshop outlines the four steps in the college process: admissions, financial aid, career planning and study skills.

The workshop lasts approximately two to three hours. Preregistration is required.
