OWLS HEAD – Hundreds of antique motorcycles, from custom Harleys to original Triumphs, will be exhibited at the annual Vintage Motorcycle Meet and Antique Aeroplane Show Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Owls Head Transportation Museum.

Owners of any pre-1987 motorcycles are urged to exhibit and will be admitted free.

In addition, hundreds of bikers with later-model motorcycles are expected to attend and will have designated parking areas near the main parking lot.

“Anyone who loves motorcycles of all years, makes and models will want to attend this event,” said Charles Chiarchiaro, museum director. “In addition to the old bikes, this event draws many modern-day cruising models from Gold Wing Hondas to BMWs.”

Also on display will be two of the museum’s more unusual motorcycles: the 1868 Roper Steam Velocipede, the first true motorcycle, invented by New England inventor Sylvester Roper, and the world’s largest motorcycle: the 1913 Scripps-Booth Bi-Autogo.

The Vintage Motorcycle Meet attracts antique custom and racing bikes from all over northern New England, many of them rare treasures. Also on display will be the museum’s small collection of antique motorcycles, including Harley-Davidsons, Indians, Hendersons, Royal Enfields and a rare 1901 Steffey Motorbike.

The museum will also demonstrate its World War I-era biplanes as part of the Antique Aeroplane Show. Planes will fly, weather-permitting, throughout the day, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Exhibitor gates will open at 8 a.m. The museum will open at 9:30 a.m. Admission: $10 for adults, $6 for children 5-17 (free under age 5), and $30 for families. The museum is on Route 73, two miles south of Rockland.
