OLD ORCHARD – A record crowd of people visited this resort today, many of them attracted apparently by a desire to see the ruins of the fire that swept a portion of the hotel and cottage section along the shore last Thursday night. It was estimated that the throng numbered 75,000 persons. Long excursion trains brought many people from distant points east and west, and the trolley lines from Portland and Biddeford were heavily patronized.

ATOMIC TEST SITE, Nev. – A nuclear test weapon exploded today with an earth-shaking rumble that was felt for hundreds of miles from the detonation point. The blast, 12th in the current series being conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission, was touched off at 4:30 a.m. after a frantic scramble by the AEC to collect test personnel who had scattered into the night when it was announced earlier that the shot had been postponed.

The Maine Department of Labor reports that workers in the Lewiston-Auburn area employed in the manufacturing sector showed an average increase in weekly wages in June, despite an average decline in the number of hours worked.
Manufacturing workers earned an average weekly wage of $232.16 in June compared to $229.96 in May. The average number of hours worked per week was 38.5 in June and 38.2 in May.
