Believing that the speed of the electric cars on Lisbon Street is such that the public safety is threatened, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted on motion of Alderman Maillet to appoint a committee to confer with Manager Reed of the L.A. & W. St. Ry. to see if the speed cannot be regulated.
It was while the aldermen were waiting for the councilmen to get into joint convention that Alderman Maillet addressed Mayor Morey. He said: “I want to call the attention of the board to the speed of the electric cars on Lisbon Street. Nearly all of them, and especially the Prospect Hill line cars, go down Lisbon Street at the rate of 35 or 40 miles an hour.”

WASHINGTON – The Senate early today nailed a jury trial amendment into the Civil Rights Bill, thereby dealing a major defeat to President Eisenhower and forces backing the administration measure. The vote was 51 to 42.
• Municipal officials earlier this year were barraged with complaints of open sewage problems from the Goff pasture area of the city, and a survey is currently being undertaken to correct the problem. The survey also is expected to include possible remedies for other open sewerage sites in the city.

BOSTON – A 56-year-old man who embarked on a voyage to England aboard a 16-foot kayak towed by five kites gave up after about an hour, Coast Guard officials say. Gerald Franz of Glandale, Ohio, set out Saturday in his kite-powered kayak to cross the Atlantic from Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod. “He tried to do it, but the winds kept blowing him back,” said Coast Guard Lt. James Decker. “He said he was only out there about an hour, so he said ‘to heck with it.'”
• Repairs to Lewiston’s water intake structure on the floor of Lake Auburn, planned to be done this fall, could mean a shutoff of city water for “not less than” 36 hours, the Lewiston Finance Committee was told Monday.
