For an overweight, doughnut-scarfing, beer-swilling, lazy idiot, Homer Simpson sure knows how to run a marathon.

His sitcom, “The Simpsons,” presents its 400th episode tonight, capping 18 seasons with no finish line in sight.

After that many episodes, it’s hard for fans to pick a favorite “Simpsons” episode, so we asked some of the people behind the hit series to give us some help.

-Executive producer Sam Simon: “It’s like a candy box. There are so many that I like. I liked the one with all the baseball players who provided all their voices (“Homer at the Bat,” 1992). I just couldn’t believe we were getting all of them.”

-Executive producer James L. Brooks: “Marge’s version of ‘Streetcar Named Desire’ stands out. (“A Streetcar Named Marge,” 1992). It just showed we could go into areas no one thought we could go into. The Dustin Hoffman show featuring Lisa stands out. (“Lisa’s Substitute,” 1991). I thought that was maybe our best message show.”

-Supervising producer Larina Adamson: “It’s “Bart Gets an F’ (1990). It’s about school and failure and then, people notice things about him. I go on sensitivity. Give me a Lisa episode with a lot of heart and you’ve got me in tears.”

-Dan Castellaneta, voice of Homer, Krusty and many others: “I like the one in which Lisa wants to bond more with Homer and then Homer discovers she can pick winners in sports (“Lisa the Greek,” 1992). The relationship is going good until the football season ends, but he makes it up to her. I also love ‘Lisa’s Substitute.’ That’s another one of the more touching episodes. I actually get a little choked up when I see Lisa saying goodbye to her teacher and then she gets mad at Homer for not being sensitive to her feelings.”

-Executive producer Matt Groening: “I love them all. They’re all my children. But the episode we did about Homer’s rival at work, Frank Grimes, seemed to be at a slightly different level (“Homer’s Enemy,” 1997). We asked ourselves: What would a real human being who had to work beside Homer act like? They’d be outraged that this idiot was getting away with what he did.”
