FALMOUTH- Maine State Ballet’s Fridays in Falmouth dance performance series will return in March with “Sleeping Beauty’s Wedding.” Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday, March 9, 16, 23 and 30, at Maine State Ballet’s Showcase Theater.
In the fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty,” Princess Aurora is cursed to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday. The benevolent Lilac Fairy intervenes, and Aurora falls into a deep sleep only to be awakened by a young prince’s kiss. One hundred years later, Prince Florimund is led to the castle to rescue the beautiful princess. The spell is broken, and Princess Aurora awakens.
It is at this point in the story that Maine State Ballet’s performance of “Sleeping Beauty’s Wedding” begins. Prince Florimund proposes marriage, and Princess Aurora accepts. The royal wedding begins. Guests at the celebration include Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, Puss ‘n Boots, Cinderella, the Bluebird, the Princess and the Frog, and the brilliant Lilac Fairy and her court.
The skills of Maine State Ballet’s company and apprentice dancers, lavish costuming, comic characters, and a happy ending are offered in this 50-minute performance suitable for all ages. Tickets are $10. For tickets, call Maine State Ballet at 781-7672. Seating is limited. The Showcase Theater is at 348 U.S. Route One.
