Luke Jensen (with whom I mostly do not agree) honorably and publicly denounced the signs about mayoral candidate Ben Chin for their racism. In contrast, Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald repudiated them because people would think he was responsible. No comment about the content or tone of the signs themselves. That doesn’t tell us what Macdonald thought of the signs, but it does tell us something about what is important to him.

In his response, Ben Chin talked poignantly about the discrimination that his grandfather suffered during the McCarthy era once his small business was successful. Lewiston does not need to re-enact that era.

I support someone who has the best interests of the diverse and vibrant population of this city at heart, who acts with integrity and principle and who thinks hard about what it is like to be here without pre-existing privileges.

That someone is Ben Chin.
