PORTLAND — A Portland man, reported missing Friday, appeared in the town of Wales a month ago, claiming he was walking to Canada, police said.

Police in Portland are searching for 39-year-old Benvindo Nzau, who has been missing since Thursday, April 20. Investigators said he was last seen by his roommate at his Washington Avenue address in Portland when he left around 10 p.m. Nzau did not say where he was going, police said, and he has not been seen since.

“Benvindo has been suffering from progressively deteriorating behavioral health issues for several months,” according to a Portland Police news release.

“On April 7, he had walked to Wales in Androscoggin County and when contacted by emergency responders he told them he was trying to walk to Canada. He may be carrying an Angolan passport. He speaks Portuguese, French, Lingala, and limited English, and in his current state he has, at times, been incoherent and may not be able to communicate with others. He has not been accessing his bank account, and he does not have the means to support or care for himself in his current state,” the statement said.

“He has a relative in Texas,” according to the release, “but friends and members of his community believe he will try to walk to the border again to cross into Canada.”

Nzau is a black male, 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, a green soccer T-shirt, blue jeans and a black winter hat.
