Codfish balls properly made are a delicious breakfast dish. Soak overnight 1 cup of the salt fish. Pick over carefully and mix with 1 pint of raw potatoes cut into slices. Boil together until the potatoes are just ready to mash. Drain off the water, mash and beat till very light and add 1 tablespoon of melted butter. When cool enough to handle, add 1 well-beaten egg. Roll into balls and fry in a basket dipped into boiling lard. A woman who is noted for her dainty breakfast fare serves codfish balls in a circle around poached eggs on toast, and the combination is delicious.

50 Years Ago, 1955

Demolition of the large garage building at 201 Middle St., now known as Fern’s Hotel Garage, was started yesterday. The property, purchased recently by the Lewiston Sun-Journal from Mrs. Laura L. Hegarty, dates back to the late 1800s. It was used many years as a livery stable and has been a garage in recent years. It is believed the original stable was constructed about the same time as the DeWitt Hotel and was used in connection with the hotel. The Middle Street property backs up to the Sun-Journal building on Park Street. When the garage building has been removed, the land will be graded and will be used as a parking lot for Sun-Journal employees for the present.

25 Years Ago, 1980

It was 1941 and the world was on the brink of its second world war. But in Lewiston-Auburn, another unlikely but growing menace – the Androscoggin River – was also plaguing residents. The sickening odors and dangerous waters of the Androscoggin River were the results of homes, towns and paper mills dumping raw wastes into the waters of the river as it wound its way along 175 scenic miles from New Hampshire to Brunswick. Now, almost 40 years later – and appropriately, during National Clean Water Week – an official of the state’s Department of Environmental Protection says the river is about ready for fishing and swimming.
