RUMFORD — The American Legion Department of Maine has announced it will hold its 69th American Legion Dirigo Boys State at Thomas College in Waterville from June 19 to 23.
“These young men are the future leaders of America,” said Commander Marcel Martineau of Napoleon Ouellette Post 24, American Legion. “We are seeking boys with outstanding qualifications in character and leadership to attend one of the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction ever designed for high school students.”
High school juniors are selected in early spring by local American Legion posts to attend the program.
The training at Boys State is objective and practical. City, county and state governments are operated by students elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, band, chorus and recreational programs.
The American Legion is seeking donations from the public and local businesses to assist with expenses associated with sending students to Boys State. All donations are accepted, whether it’s a sole sponsor of $300 or a co-sponsor donation.
Last year 200 attended Boys State, of which eight were from Mountain Valley High School. This year’s goal is 300 boys.
