Lewiston – Oxford Networks recently announced the launch of Maine’s first 10-gigabit fiber optic network for residential and business use. The network has greater capacity, allowing the company to provide more communication services, at faster speeds and with greater dependability.

The network is part of Oxford Network’s commitment to invest in the most recent technology for the benefit of the state, according to Craig Gunderson, president and CEO of Oxford Networks. “Bringing this telecommunications technology to businesses in Maine encourages economic development that is crucial for the state at this time.”

In 2008, Oxford Networks invested approximately $10 million in telecommunications infrastructure construction in the state of Maine. It occurred at the same time that Oxford Networks was contracted by the University of Maine System to provide the state’s universities and colleges and The Jackson Laboratory with a separate 10-gigabit fiber optic network.

Most digital Internet subscribers receive Internet information at one megabyte per second. The 10-gigabit-per-second network is 10,000 times faster. At that speed thousands of photographs could be transmitted on the Internet in a single second.

The network has actually been operating since the beginning of the year. Oxford Networks currently offers a fiber optic network to more than 13 towns and cities in Maine and southern New Hampshire – a territory from Bangor to Portsmouth, N.H., according to Matt Jancovic, director of marketing and customer service.
