CHEVERUS AT OXFORD HILLS/BUCKFIELD

The Vikings get to welcome in new Cheverus coach Mike Vance, who replaces the legendary John Wolfgram. The Wolfgram assistant still has plenty of talent on his roster, though.
LEWISTON AT WINDHAM
Friday, 7 p.m.
The Blue Devils think they have improved, and confidence will be key. A season opener against always-tough Windham will test that confidence.
MOUNTAIN VALLEY AT GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER
Friday, 7 p.m.
The Patriots won this opening matchup on the road last year to kick-start a 3-0 start. But the Falcons are much improved, and Gray-NG has some holes to fill.
MT. BLUE AT CONY
Friday, 7 p.m.
The Cougars won the matchup of recent Class B state champs last year, and it gave them home field advantage for a playoff rematch, which they also won. Similar ramifications could be on the line.
WELLS AT SPRUCE MOUNTAIN
Friday, 7 p.m.
There’s a lot of distance between these two budding rivals. The Warriors put some distance on the scoreboard in last year’s opener. The Phoenix don’t want to see a conference foe disappear from view ahead of them after just one week.
WESTBROOK AT LEAVITT
Friday, 7 p.m.
The Hornets got an introduction to the Blue Blazes with a narrow win on the road last year. Leavitt won’t take Westbrook lightly this year, and are thankful to have this game at home with such a young team.
DIRIGO AT MEDOMAK VALLEY
Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
The Panthers are ineligible for the postseason, since they are playing down in Class D. But this will be a good test for a small, but talented Cougars squad against a Medomak team that fared well playing a D North schedule last year.
MARANACOOK AT OAK HILL
Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
The Raiders have now graduated three years’ worth of state championship players. Now they start a new season at home against a Black Bears squad they didn’t face last year.
POLAND AT FREEPORT
Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
The Gene Keene era for the Knights starts with the lone winless team in Class C South last year. Keene is trying to teach his new charge about respect, so they won’t be taking the Falcons lightly.
WINTHROP/MONMOUTH AT LISBON
Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
Ask most coaches in Class D South and you’ll hear that these are the two teams to beat this season. One of them will get the early target on its back with a win in this season opener.
