AUGUSTA (AP) – A bill to create a civil penalty when a driver’s motor-vehicle violation results in a death awaits Gov. John Baldacci’s signature.
Rep. Patsy Crockett’s bill was prompted in part by an accident last fall that killed a Vassalboro teenager. The 17-year-old driver faced moving violations including speeding.
The original bill sponsored by Augusta Democrat Crockett would have created a crime if a motor vehicle death results in death, but the bill’s been amended to create a civil penalty. It also requires a mandatory 14-day loss of license, which can be lengthened to four years. A judge can also order a fine of up to $5,000 and community service.
