BOOTHBAY HARBOR (AP) – Boothbay Harbor hopes to join Casco Bay in being designated a “no discharge area” by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection petitioned EPA to approve the designation. If approved, discharges of treated and untreated boat sewage would be prohibited in coastal waters that are within the town’s boundaries.
Robert Varney, regional EPA administrator, described Boothbay Harbor as “a jewel in the crown of classic New England coastal destinations,” and he says the designation will help to ensure that it remains so.
The EPA will take public comments through Feb. 4.
