BETHEL, Maine (AP) – The giant snowwoman who’s towering above the town of Bethel now has a name: Olympia.

Organizers announced the name – honoring Maine’s senior Sen. Olympia Snowe – in advance of Friday’s formal unveiling.

Bethel claimed the record for world’s tallest snowman in 1999. That snowman was dubbed Angus, King of the Mountain, in honor of then-Gov. Angus King. Olympia will have to rise at least 114 feet to beat the old record.

Angus was tall and cylindrical, making him look like a giant lighthouse. Olympia, by contrast, looks less like a lighthouse. One organizer says the goal was to have a more feminine shape. She has pine trees for arms and eye lashes created from skis.
