MAPLETON (AP) – An unprovoked attack by two pit bulls left a 66-year-old man with a torn nose, bite marks all over his body and puncture wounds to his cheeks and jaws, authorities said.
Galen Smith of Mapleton was walking to catch a bus to take him to Presque Isle when the attack occurred at about 1 p.m. Friday, said Sgt. Julie Bergan of the Maine State Police. “They pretty much tore his nose half off,” Bergan said. “It was a pretty brutal mauling.”
The dogs, weighing about 75 pounds each, brought Smith to the ground and bit his sides and legs, though Bergan said the worst bites were to his arms and face.
Tyler Dennett, 24, and Melanie McLaughlin, 19, both of Mapleton, were each charged with owning a dangerous dog, dog at large and failure to license a dog. They face arraignment April 4 in Presque Isle District Court.
Bergan quoted the owners as saying they were away at the time of the attack and the dogs had managed to escape through an open window.
The dogs have been quarantined and a judge will decide if they will be euthanized.
Smith was transported by ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle, where his nose was stitched together and his other wounds were treated.
The dogs were placed under quarantine at the Central Aroostook Humane Society in Presque Isle. They will be held there until a court hearing determines whether they will be returned to their owners or euthanized.
