ST. STEPHEN, New Brunswick (AP) – A body found floating in the St. Croix River behind the St. Stephen border crossing has been identified as that of a 31-year-old man from Tennessee.

Chad Lamphear tried to get into Canada at the border crossing last weekend, but was denied entry and returned to Calais, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Thursday.

Police believe he was trying to get into Canada by illegally crossing the river.

There was no evidence of foul play.

An autopsy will be performed today at the regional hospital in Saint John to determine the exact cause of death.

The Mounted Police said they did not know Lamphear’s hometown.

Police in Calais were referring inquiries about the case to Cookeville, Tenn., where Sgt. Tim Terry declined to comment.
