LIVERMORE FALLS – Selectmen voted Monday night to refund nearly $3,800 in taxes to a Livermore Falls man, Town Manager Martin Puckett said.

Gerard Castonguay owns property on the border between Livermore Falls and Wayne, and Puckett says selectmen “found out we (had been) assessing him for property in another municipality” for at least two years. Town officials had erringly assumed a chicken barn valued at nearly $37,000 was in Livermore Falls. Wayne officials apparently did the same thing, Puckett said, effectively charging Castonguay twice.

Castonguay will be given an abatement of nearly $3,800 for the two years, Puckett said.

In other business, the board voted to instruct Puckett to put a mowing contract out to bid this week. Earl Howard has been doing the job every year for a long time for $2,000, Puckett said. But, he said, the town is moving toward advertising for bids on most municipal expenditures “to make sure the town’s getting the best price on services.”

Selectmen also “had some sewer issues to discuss” Monday night, Puckett said. “We have some sewer problems, with some sewer backups in town.” After sending a camera down the system to see what the problem was, Puckett said board members discovered roots had broken through the 100-year-old clay pipes. Work is getting started soon, he said, but selectmen won’t know how much repairing or replacing the pipes will cost “until we really get in there.”
