RANGELEY – Joey McLafferty, a Rangeley pharmacist, was back behind the pharmacy counter Thursday filling prescriptions under the supervision of another pharmacist.
“I passed the test,” McLafferty said Thursday. “I’m very happy. It’s nice to be back.”
McLafferty, the owner of Riddle’s Pharmacy in Rangeley, had his pharmacy license temporarily suspended in June after a state inspector found several state and federal security violations, including failure to secure prescription drugs. The state launched an investigation after three teenagers were charged with stealing drugs from the store where they worked.
The pharmacy board ruled in August that the 71-year-old pharmacist had indeed violated pharmacy regulations and handed down several sanctions he had to complete before the board would consider restoring his license.
McLafferty had failed the examine twice since August and learned Monday that he passed it the third time around. He learned the results Monday.
“Oh God, I felt relieved,” McLafferty said. “The nightmare is over.”
Once McLafferty completes his 14 days of working under pharmacist Robert Nutting, who has been working in the Rangeley store for McLafferty, Nutting will submit a report to the state board of licensing complaint officer.
The soonest the state board could consider restoring McLafferty’s license is during the board’s Jan. 10 meeting, Assistant Attorney General Andrew Black said Thursday.
