DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Greene Historical Society needs information about living along the Androscoggin River in Greene years ago and now.

The society will host a program on this at 6 p.m. Aug. 17.

Please send information, pictures, etc., to PO Box 65, Greene, Maine 04236,  or leave information at the Greene Town Office, 220 Main St., attention Sally Ann Hebert, president of Greene Historical Society.

In particular, we would like pictures, stories and information of foundations under the water in Greene.

ANSWER: What a wonderful project!

Greene is a beautiful town named after Nathanael Greene, who was a major general of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. So trusted, by Gen. George Washington, Greene was given command of Boston after the British fled in March 1776.

Greene, Maine, is one of many towns in the United States named after this American patriot.

In Maine, Greene covers some 35.19 square miles, of which nearly three square miles are water. It straddles the Androscoggin River, so it’s highly likely there would have been foundations along its banks.

And, of course, it’s now become a great recreational resource.

So, dig deep and find some photos and stories to share with the Greene Historical Society. They’re sure to uncover some interesting personal stories from local residents.

And, if you want to help support this project, or become active in the society, membership is $5 per family.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: On behalf of Bolster Heights Residential Care, I would like to thank everyone for the donations we have received and continue to receive on a regular basis. They are genuinely appreciated by our residents.

I am looking for crafts that our male residents can do such as airplane automotive or boat models, wood crafts, leather work and wood burning.

Among all activities, they enjoy live performances and entertainment. It can be educational, musical or theatrical.
