A Lewiston resident told police last night he and his friends spotted an unidentified flying object in the skies over South Lewiston. Police said the UFO was spotted in the sky over Pinette’s Mortuary Chapel on Lisbon Street. The object was red and going in a westerly direction, he said. It was noted that NASA is currently experimenting with atmosphere rockets at Wallops Island, W. Virginia, and that the atmospheric effects, sometimes spectacular, are visible on occasion in this area.

The Auburn City Council Monday approved an option to purchase 51.7 acres for the Kittyhawk Industrial Park for $315,000. The land purchase will allow the city to use an $840,000 Economic Development Administration grant and a $750,000 State Jobs Bond grant to develop 13 lots for industrial use. “Obviously the city is pleased with the willingness of the sellers to negotiate with the city at this late date,” Mayor Richard Trafton said after councilors met in executive session and then voted publicly. The council will probably vote on a final purchase agreement in two weeks, to give the public a chance to offer input, he said. Because the city needed the land to begin using its Jobs Bond grants, “there was increased pressure on both sides,” Trafton said.
