RUMFORD – The Penalty Box will be this year’s sponsor of the annual Men’s Basketball Tournament to benefit the American Lung Association. This tourney, that has traditionally taken place in Rangeley at the end of March, will be played in Rumford and Mexico at Mountain Valley High School and Mountain Valley Middle School, April 1-3.
The tourney, known as Mike’s Pub N Grub Tournament and most recently The Sarge’s Pub N Grub Tournament, is changing venues due to renovations at Sarge’s and the availability of the gym facilities in the River Valley area. The Mountain Valley Rec Basketball League will host the event, with all coordinating activities and off court events at The Penalty Box Restaurant. All profits will be donated to the ALAM and its annual Bike Trek Across Maine.
This tourney usually draws teams from the local leagues and from around Central and Southern Maine. A women’s division has been attempted on several occasions and again is welcome. However, a lack of women’s leagues in the area has hampered participation. Entry fee is $300 per team. All entries are guaranteed 3 games and could play as many as 6.
It is expected there will be 2 men’s divisions, A and B, with 6 to 8 teams in each division. There will be foul shooting, 3-point and slam dunk contests during the weekend.
Following the finals Sunday, awards for all-star team and MVP’s, along with championship trophies, will be presented.
