RUMFORD – Lisbon used its depth, piled up 222 points and repeated as the Mid-State League wrestling champion by beating Dirigo (192 points) on Saturday.

Lisbon led the way with champions Joel Pomerleau (119-pounds), Mike McNamara (125), Matt Nicholson (130), Cam Bubar (171), Art Stambach (189) and Joe Doughty at (215).

The Greyhounds had rallied to win the 2008 MSL by six points over Dirigo.

Dirigo was led by champions Alex Miele (152) and Josh Palmer (160), but it was a total team effort as all 12 wrestlers placed in the top four of their respective weight classes.

“They wrestled well,” Dirigo coach Doug Gilbert said, alluding to some surprises. “We really had a great consolation semifinal round because all seven won matches and then five of them won. This is the first time in a league meet that every one we brought ended up placing.”

Third-place Mountain Valley edged Wells 159-158, led by champs Ryan Burgess (103), Ernie Matthews (135) and Josh Thornton (140). The Falcons rallied with thirds by Robert Worthley (112), Matt Duka (152) and Ryan Glover (215).

Lisbon had taken a seemingly comfortable 66-point lead when nine individuals won semifinal matches. This included Class C state champion Forrest Cornell (112.

“We knew coming in that we controlled our own destiny,” said Lisbon coach Mark Stevens, who was named coach of the Year. “There was no need for us to be looking over our shoulders for help from other teams. We had five goals for today and the performance set us up for regional and states the next two weeks.”

Lisbon’s lead was 17 points entering the championship and consolation finals. The Greyhounds delivered by winning four of five head-to-head matches against the Cougars.

Pomerleau stuck Derek Castonguay, McNamara stuck Ryan Lemay and Stambach stuck James Olsen. Marcus Bubar (145) decisioned Tom Hines for third place.

Bubar sandwiched Mike Gregg of Wells and Doughty (39-2) sunk in a power half nelson to pin Jake Linkletter of Madison.

“There are a lot of expectations on team this season,” Doughty said. “We’ve been more dominate, so there is more pressure. I’m quite confident because I have a new workout partner, Dan Skoefield, and it has really helped.”

Burgess decisioned Shane Daley of Wells, 8-3.

“This is awesome,” Burgess said. “It feels great because he had beaten me twice this season, but I was able to slip my legs in on him.”

Matthews (32-1) battled with a bloody nose to stick Matt Dibona of Wells, and Thornton executed a reversal for a 5-3 decision against Mike McManus of Lisbon. Mountain Valley freshman Taylor Carey, who upset Bubar in the semifinals, was pinned by another state champion, Bill Gauthier of York. Gauthier and Miele were voted co-Most Outstanding Wrestlers. Miele secured a reversal late in the second period and held off Kyle Huston of Lisbon, 5-3. Palmer recorded a takedown at the end of the second period and countered Cody Guzman of Monmouth to win 9-7.

“I lost my wind in the first period,” Palmer said. “It was due to a lack of live wrestling, my sore ribs. I led early, but he is strong and hard to get moves on.”

Fryeburg’s Jesse Sawin (285) lost 8-3 in overtime to Stephen Johnson of Wells.
