RUMFORD – The rematch between the Jay-Livermore Falls and Mountain Valley girls’ soccer teams failed to settle a thing.

Each team scored a goal in different halves. Kristin Ridge for Mountain Valley and Lexa Deering for Jay-Livermore Falls each scored, but even after two-five minute overtimes the game ended in a 1-1 tie at Hosmer Field on Wednesday night.

The two MVC foes had battled to a 0-0 tie earlier this month.

Class C Jay-Livermore Falls (2-2-3) had picked up the pace in the second half, and Deering scored on a break away at 28:05. Deering had broke free on the left side and kicked the ball, but Falcon freshman goalie Kaitlin Armstrong rushed out to block it. Armstrong failed to secure the wet ball, and Deering nailed the rebound in to the net.

On the play, Armstrong was kicked in the head and left to go to the hospital.

“We had played to defensively in the first half,” Wildcats coach Travis Magnusson said. “So, we adjusted by moving a girl up in the second half. That allowed us to provide more pressure and get more opportunities on offense.”

Class B Mountain Valley (1-3-3) had relied on its defense to offset the quick Wildcat forwards Lindsay Jacques and Marley Stevens. Beth Moore and Jennica Turner also stood out on defense

The Falcons countered the attack with Lysie Dupuis, Kelsey Arsenault, Tia Cote and Tia White. The Falcons utilized wholesale substitutions through out the game

“We played a lot better tonight,” Mountain Valley said assistant coach Jason Perreault, who was filling in for varsity coach Kristin Tyler, who just had baby last week. “I had to make numerous changes because a starting forward was out. This included moving Armstrong to stopper and she started the second half in place of my senior goalie Krista Lee .”

Mountain Valley had drawn first blood when Ridge scored with 36.3 seconds left in the first half. The Falcons had received a free kick and Kate Thorne had booted it toward the crease and Wildcat goalie Katie Beaulieu (eight saves) squared up, but Ridge got her shin on the ball and put it in the net.

“We were more aggressive tonight,” Perreault said. “The girls love to play under the lights, and I told them every one contributed. Last game between us was on a shorter field, but tonight the field is wider and allowed for adjustments.”
