LEWISTON – Finally, a one-goal girls’ lacrosse game that went Lewiston High School’s way.

Lewiston scored four unanswered goals to conclude Wednesday’s Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference battle with Oxford Hills. Shelby Turcotte’s run from midfield with 2:50 remaining provided the tie-breaking exclamation point in a 12-11 victory.

Now the seeds of doubt planted in a 4-3 home loss to Cony and a 9-8 defeat at Mt. Ararat won’t get watered. Now, owning a season sweep of the Vikings, the Blue Devils don’t have to wonder if the first win was merely a result of Oxford Hills being short-handed.

“It’s huge for us. Just a huge day in general,” said Lewiston coach Bill Grant. “To pull this one off finally is what we needed to do.”

Turcotte, who ran track at the start of her high school career, led Lewiston (6-3) with four goals and an assist. Kristen D’Eramo, one of seven senior honor students nearing the end of her career with Lewiston, added a hat trick of her own.

Rachel Strauss’ goal gave Oxford Hills (6-2) a three-goal lead with 8:14 remaining before Amie Daniels scored her second of the day for Lewiston to stem the tide.

“I think we just got kind of excited,” D’Eramo said. “It was definitely a roller-coaster.”

Turcotte scored on a direct shot off an Oxford Hills penalty to cut the lead to one. Another freebie by Michelle Rancourt tied it with 5:06 left.

An Oxford Hills turnover gave Lewiston a dead-ball opportunity near its own bench and set the table for the go-ahead strike. Kristen Lacasse launched a centering pass to the slippery Turcotte, who cut a 40-yard swath through several would-be Viking defenders and walked in alone on goalkeeper Mariah Kimball.

“Coach gave us a pretty good speech during our last timeout. It got us pumped up and ready to score some goals,” Turcotte said. “The defense really stepped up at the end, also. It’s probably the biggest win we’ve had all season.”

Oxford Hills owned the momentum early in each half. The Vikings exploded to leads of 4-0 and 5-1 before Lewiston scored five straight.

Ebony Mills’ third goal of the half pushed the pendulum back in the other direction, and Lauren Brett’s second strike off an assist from Mills gave the Vikings a 7-6 lead at the break.

“One team gets the momentum and they go with it,” said Oxford Hills coach McKayla Bell. “We had a series of fouls which caused a lot of turnovers. They’re very fast up on the top there. They had a lot of fast breaks on us.”

Mills notched her fourth and fifth goals to answer a pair of tying tallies by Lewiston in the second half. Jessica Smith and Strauss connected to make it 11-8, but Grant still liked his team’s chances.

“These girls, it’s unbelievable how they pull together and go on a hot streak,” said the Devils’ second-year coach. “Even when we were down three goals at the end, I thought if we got one, we were going to do it.”
