Apparently, Nick Williams can sing, too.

Without a background in performing arts, Williams tried out for Poland Regional High School’s version of “Camelot” this year.

He earned the lead role.

Williams, a senior, can add another accolade to his list, right beside that lead role in the play. On Thursday, the Gatorade Company, in partnership with RISE Magazine, announced that Williams is the 2007-08 Gatorade Maine Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year.

“I guess there really isn’t much he can’t do if he wants to,” Poland cross country coach Sean Galipeau said.

Williams has earned his share of running accolades.

He’s earned his way into the New England Cross Country Championships in all four years of his eligibility. He’s a multiple league, regional and state champion, having also finished second and third at the Class B state race.

“He runs well on hard courses,” Galipeau said. “He never had a bad race there, though if you ask him he might feel differently about it, but that’s because he puts such high expectations on himself, because he knows he can do things.”

Now, he’s also part of history.

As Maine’s best, Williams is now a finalist for the first Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year award, which will be announced later this month.

His time in this year’s state Class B final was 16:30.48, 15 seconds ahead of the closest runner.

But the award also takes into account academics and all-around activity. Williams maintains a 3.14 GPA, plays basketball in the winter and was the lead in the school’s production of Camelot.

But clearly, his biggest accomplishments have come on trails and tracks across Maine.

“He’s clearly the perfect candidate for this,” Galipeau said.
