The Blue Devils have been unstoppable this season, producing an average margin of victory of 10-1. They’ve allowed eight goals in seven games while scoring 70.
Four of the team’s forwards are among the top six in Maine in terms of point production, and with his four goals against Edward Little on Wednesday, Casey Poussard leads all players with 15 goals.
But ask the players on the team and their coaches what the keys to success will be tonight against St. Dom’s, and they’ll have nothing to say about offensive production.
“We can’t let ourselves get caught up in the hype of the rivalry,” Lewiston coach Norm Gagne said Thursday. “Both teams have done that in the past, they get really hyped up and a lot of times don’t play to their strengths.”
So the Blue Devils’ strength is … scoring, right?
Try again.
“We’re going to try to play to our strength, which is physical with speed,” Gagne said. “The biggest thing, with their speed, is that we have to play good defense,”
Lewiston also has experience. Poussard, Jon Roy, Jordan Bourgoin and Matt Letourneau, the team’s top forwards, are all seniors. They’ve all been with the team for four years. They know a thing or two about winning.
“They always say, ‘bigger, faster, stronger,'” Gagne said. “I’m hoping that’s going to be true, that ‘bigger, faster, stronger’ is going to prevail.”
Another thing Lewiston has done well this year is remain calm. In blowout games (six of the Devils’ seven wins have been by three or more goals), they’ve managed to keep an even keel and stay out of the penalty box.
“We’ve stayed out of the box and we’ve played a disciplined game,” Gagne said.
Speed, brawn, composure under pressure and an unstoppable offense could make for a long night for the Saints.
