WINTHROP – Old Orchard dominated play on both sides of the ball and knocked off previously undefeated Winthrop 18-6 on Friday night.

The Seagulls (4-2) used two first-half scores, and then held the ball for more then seven minutes to start the third quarter to seal the victory.

“We have more offensive plays then any other team we’ve played,” said Old Orchard coach Dean Plante.

“Our bottom line is, we are good enough to beat anybody, but not good enough to overcome our mistakes,” he said.

The Seagulls broke into the scoring column first. Early in the second period, sophomore quarterback Dean Perrone found fullback Todd Newton on a 14-yard pass play to convert a long third-down play.

Two plays later, tailback Zack Chase took a pitch to the left sideline, cut back into the middle, and raced 34 yards for the game’s first score with 7:38 left before halftime.

Winthrop’s only score of the night came late in the second quarter when junior quarterback Jordan Conant found Zach Farrington streaking down the right sideline for a 44-yard touchdown bomb with just under 2 minutes remaining until halftime.

Old Orchard was not done. Running there hurry-up offense to near perfection, the Seagulls marched 64 yards in 10 plays.

This time, Perrone found Brandon Ouellette for a short 2-yard pass as time ran out in the first half for a 12-6 advantage.

The Seagulls then dominated play in the third quarter.

Taking the second-half kickoff, they held the ball for nearly 8 minutes with a 14-play, 70-yard touchdown march.

Perrone finished the drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Nate Tarbox for the final margin of victory.

The Ramblers final effort of the night was stalled at the Old Orchard 30-yard line as the Seagulls defense stiffened and held on downs.

“I think they (Old Orchard) had a great game plan,” said Winthrop coach Joel Stoneton.

“They did a great job of keeping our offense off the field, and we couldn’t stop their run.”
